Samsung earned the top position with a 29% share in the 2nd quarter of 2018, by outperforming the competitor Chinese brand, Xiaomi, in India.
Business experts are of the opinion that the revived Galaxy J-Series (i.e. Galaxy J6, Galaxy J4 etc.) has a major hand in the South Korean giant’s victory over the Beijing-based brand that tumbled from more than 31 % in the first quarter to 28 percent in the final quarter. In any case, the Chinese giant figured out how to deliver the highest number of shipments amid the second quarter.
Next to Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo were able to win the 3rd and 4th position winning 12% and 10% market share respectively. On the other hand, sister brand of Huawei, Honor, captured the 5th spot with a 3% market share in quarter two.
These new launches from Samsung in terms of the J-Series phones, brought along some of the most popular and eagerly awaited features such as the dual camera, facial unlock, infinity display etc., crosswise over various price categories for first time ever. Furthermore, the solid network of offline distribution and aggressive advertising efforts around its J-Series smartphone gadgets helped the brand to conquer the market as well as mindshare amid the quarter.
According to the research firm Counterpoint, Samsung’s growth “can be attributed to its strong product and supply chain strategy which has allowed it to launch products with a longer shelf life than its competitors and that too in the important sub-Rs. 10,000 segment.”
With a mention of premier brand Apple, Counterpoint stated that the Cupertino-based organization saw a slow growth as it experienced changes in its distribution methods. As indicated by Counterpoint, Apple was successful in gaining a 1% market share amid the quarter, the least in recent times!
Second to Jio, comes Samsung with a 9% share with respect to the Indian feature phone shipments, while Nokia won an 8% share, Itel and Lava both with a 5% share – combined, the five brands totaled 75% of the feature phone market shipments in quarter number 2.
As per the report from Counterpoint, Lava happens to be the sole brand which showed a positive yearly growth amid the quarter facilitated by entry-level gadgets that comprise of its first Android Go handset – Z50.
Smartphone brands likewise made use of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 season as they planned their latest launches and campaigns around the same time with a large number of offers over numerous channels.
